Environment
As the owner of more than half the developable land in the Salt Lake Valley, it is Kennecott Land's responsibility to ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful land, plentiful water and clean air.
We've started by preserving and optimizing open space. Thousands of acres of land will remain as open space and habitat for wildlife. We are also committed to use and carefully manage another valuable asset – our water. Through an innovative water management plan we are able to use water today and at the same time plan to ensure future generations enjoy an abundant water supply.
Kennecott Land is already doing this at our first community, Daybreak, where we are able to capture nearly 100% of storm water and snow melt runoff. And as a centerpiece at Daybreak, Oquirrh Lake not only serves as a great recreational amenity, but it is an outstanding example of resource conservation. Water from the lake is used to irrigate some of our water-wise landscaping in Daybreak’s parks and open space. For more information on Daybreak's environmental history
, please read this overview.
Here are some other ways we’re conserving resources:
- All home builders are required to build Energy-Star® rated homes.
- Builders and contractors participate in an on-site program to recycle their construction waste.
- Low-water flow fixtures are offered to home buyers.
- Residents can grow their own vegetables in the organic community garden.
- Gravel for the construction process is retained on site.
- We’re preserving 25% open space at Daybreak.
- At Daybreak, we are in the process of planting 100,000 trees.
As Kennecott Land looks for ways to continuously expand its vision for sustainable development on the West Bench, we are reminded that it takes creativity and dedication. It also pays off – Kennecott Land is the only land developer in the nation to be certified with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
